How to Find Work in New Zealand: A Guide For Working Holiday Makers

Yes, your working holiday visa for New Zealand has been approved – congratulations! You are going to have the best time in this fantastic country (if I do say so myself!).  I’m sure you will have already started drooling over #nzworkingholiday on Instagram and are busy making a list of all the amazing places you want to visit while in NZ.  All that breathtaking scenery and adventuring takes its toll on the bank balance though, so you’re going to need to pick up some work along the way to fund the trip of a lifetime.

It’s up to you whether you go classic backpacker and pick up anything and everything you can, wherever you happen to be, or if you have the best of both worlds and keep your career on track – get a haircut and get a real job!  Either way, you’ll need to get your ducks in a row first.

  • Before you can start counting the dollars, you will need two other very important numbers: IRD number and bank account number
  • You will need a great CV (that’s Kiwi for resume). 2-3 pages is a good length. Go easy on responsibilities and hard on achievements.
  • Decide what type of work you want and start searching online. Remember to search for temp or contract roles that fit within your visa restrictions. Uncle Google should be able to get you most of the way there but here are some of the main job boards in New Zealand to target your job search.

Registering with a recruitment agency can be a great way to help take the pressure off you in finding the right role.  Not all agencies are created equally though; so make sure you choose a recruitment consultant who will listen to your wants and needs and will work together with you to find or create the right opportunities.

people2people has placed hundreds of working holiday makers in New Zealand and Australia.  Check out this video to see how we do things a wee bit differently. We’d love to have a chat to see how we can help you make the most of your working holiday. You can get in touch with our Auckland team via email or call 0800 727 968.

    Hi Sheryl and Conroy,
We can try to help you in your job hunt if you are in New Zealand and if you have the right to work here. It’s important to notice that we specialise in white collar jobs (that’s to say accounting, human resources, administration, legal support, operations, supply chain, customer service, property, executive, sales and marketing). Therefore, we won’t be able to help you for jobs related to engineering. Have a look at our website http://www.people2people.co.nz and explore your opportunities in New Zealand! 🙂
I wish you the best for 2019!

      Good morning Shamshad,
Unfortunately, this post isn’t a job offer but is about finding a job in New Zealand. You can check our job vacancies on http://www.people2people.co.nz. However, people2people is specialised in office jobs, and that doesn’t include farm jobs. 🙂
      Have a good day,

      Good morning Leonides,
Unfortunately, people2people isn’t specialised in hospitality jobs. However, if you are looking for opportunities in New Zealand, I would suggest coming to New Zealand first: indeed, employers, especially in the hospitality industry, will suggest a one-day trial, to see how you work and if you fit in their team.
Have a good day 🙂 and I wish you the best for 2019

  5. Good morning my name is jenny. I’m frm malaysia. I have a diploma in childhood education and 15 yrs working experience in teaching kindergarten. Hope i can apply new job in nz. Hope to hear and kindly reply tq

    1. Kiwi Working Holiday

      Hi Jenny,
Unfortunately, people2people isn’t specialised in childhood education and won’t be able to help you in that case. We recruit in accounting, human resources, administration, legal support, operations, supply chain, customer service, property, executive, sales and marketing.
If you are not already here, I would suggest applying for a work visa – if it’s possible – and to come to New Zealand. Indeed, most companies won’t hire you if you’re not here and available for a face-to-face interview.
I wish you the best for 2019 and your job hunt in New Zealand!

    1. Kiwi Working Holiday

Hi Hilario! My answer will be the same than the previous one. Unfortunately, my company isn’t specialised in your field. people2people recruits in accounting, human resources, administration, legal support, operations, supply chain, customer service, property, executive, sales and marketing. I suggest checking the Skill Shortage List to make sure that one of the jobs you are looking for is in this list. It is otherwise very difficult to come to New Zealand and to get sponsored. I wish you the best!

  11. Hi I’m Juaneth from hongkong looking a job in new Zealand I’m been working for sales and marketing for many years ago. And I’m there in nz in 2013 for a tourist visa only.

    1. Kiwi Working Holiday

Hi Juaneth, it can be hard to get a job when you are on a tourist visa, and people2people won’t be able to help you if you don’t have the right to work in New Zealand. However, you can get a Working Holiday Visa (check this link), it could be a good start to come to New Zealand and find work. If you have any other question regarding Working Holiday Visas, let me know at remi@people2people.co.nz. Have a good day,

Hi Mohammed, unfortunately, we can’t give you any immigration advice, and we won’t be able to help you find work in New Zealand if you haven’t got a work visa (many companies would see this as a risk and would be reluctant to engage with an agency where there would also be a fee for our service).
